Cutting turf is the process of taking a list of voters from Create a List and organizing them into geographic units for knocking doors. You’ll want to bring your artistic a-game (artistic skills not actually required), because you’re basically drawing shapes on a map.

Once you’ve created the list of voters you would like to contact for a given canvass (please note canvassing lists are limited to 5K), select the “Cut Turf” button from the top of your list page.

VAN will display a map with all addresses in your list.

  • Click on the map to place your first geographic marker.

  • When you click somewhere else on the map, it will drop a second marker on the map and draw a line between them.

  • Using your geographic markers, draw around your dots to include them in a turf.

  • Once a marker has been placed, you can move it by clicking and holding on it.

  • Complete the individual turf by clicking on your first dot again.

  • Try to create turfs that are roughly equal in the number of doors per volunteer.
