Our work, personal, and campaign lives are more & more online.
We are increasingly vulnerable to cyber attacks because adversaries can easily take advantage of your everyday online activities (email, texting, banking, etc.)
So it’s an easy setup for subsequent attacks. The result can range from installing and spreading viruses and malware to the stealing of sensitive data.
It's important to note that cyberattacks are not just for presidential and/or high-profile candidates! We all must remain vigilant that you are a potential target.
Here are some fairly recent campaign hacks that made the national news:
- Hans Keirstad of Orange County (48th Congressional District of California) was bombarded with phishing attacks that were investigated by the FBI
- California Rep. Katie Hill's former staffer, performed a sophisticated coordinated attack on several campaign accounts
- Florida Senator Annette Taddeo's race was up-ended by Russian hacking
- Claire McCaskill, Senator from Missouri, was attacked by a Fancy Bear malware attack
