Hi Michigan VAN Users, The new legislative districts are now available in Create a List! You’ll see the new districts listed as “State House,” “State Senate,” and “Congressional.” The current districts are still available in Create a List and prepended with “2011-2021.”
Normally, districts are loaded into VAN directly from the MI voter file that is prepared by the Secretary of State’s office. Although the Secretary of State hasn’t updated the MI Voter File with new districts yet, we were able to upload the new legislative districts via a person-level match on the January voter file.
The new districts in Create a List won’t capture movement of voters until the districts are applied to the voter file. For example, if a voter was registered within the boundaries of the new CD 12 on the January voter file, but then moved and registered within the new CD 04 boundaries in a subsequent voter file, they'll still show up in the new CD 12 until the voter file is updated with the new districts by the SoS.
Additionally, only the new legislative districts are visible in the Districts section of individual voter records. All other districts, including Precinct, Ward, County Commission, and School Board, have not been updated with new districts in Create a List or in voter records.
We haven't received a timeline from the Secretary of State for when new districts will be applied to the voter file, but we’ll send out another update when we have more information from their team.
